Welcome...

Eco Lodges Indonesia has taken on a new venture to help Way Kambas National Park protect the endangered Sumatran Elephant and the rare Sumatran Rhino and Tiger, almost on the verge of extinction – we cannot let it happen.

Satwa Sumatra Elephant eco Lodge is only 500 metres from the Park entrance, adjoining a rural village, which has to repel elephants which try to demolish the crops. Employment based on the Lodge helps them too.  Set in an extensive walled garden full of tropical fruit trees there are four cottages each with spacious rooms sleeping up to four people with spring beds, ceiling fans, hot water showers and western toilets. There is a desk and computer power point and a verandah and comfortable chairs. All guest cottages, facilities, some perimeter lighting and office are powered by renewable solar energy. The windows are fully screened. In a delightful open restaurant , meals give a taste of Indonesian recipes and ingredients, with a full western breakfast to start the day, or a picnic box.

Butterflies from Sumatra :: Atlas moth - the largest in the worldWith a cold beer to hand as owls “poink” to each other at dusk, guests can recount their adventures taking an elephant safari, cycling or walking in the Park with a Ranger, or the animals and birds seen on the boat trip down the river to the sea or to the swamps where the endemic white winged duck is found.

A high point might be the early morning visit to the breeding area of the gentle Sumatran Rhino, at the Rhino Conservation Unit in the Park. This is by prior arrangement through the Lodge and the fee includes a donation to the Conservation Unit. This is a rare privilege.

Sumatran elephants :: Elephant safaris and displays.Way Kambas Elephant Training School is a must for an elephant ride or just to watch them bathing. It is also a good bird watching area.  Bird watching tours are one of our specialties, with knowledgeable Rangers. There is a special quiet boat for birding on the river. The rooms have a bird list and a short (as yet) butterfly list.

All ticket confirmation and tour details can be worked out in our office where there is a telephone, fax, email and internet (slow) access.

Our driver delivers you back to Lampung air port approximately two hours away , and meets incoming guests. There are also tours to local attractions such as Lake Ranau, or to see traditional dances.

How to get there
By air to Lampung (20 minutes from Jakarta), then by our transport via Metro to the lodge (2 hours).

YOU WON'T FORGET YOUR ELEPHANT PARK VISIT!

About Eco Lodges Indonesia
' BOTH SIDES OF THE WALLACE LINE'

The lodges of Eco Lodges Indonesia give our guests a unique opportunity to combine some adventure with comfortable, relaxing accommodation on both sides of The Wallace Line.

Bajo Komodo eco Lodge provides tours to Rinca and Komodo islands where the giant reptiles and mound building orang footed scrub fowl live with giant palms and strangely shaped hills as a back ground. The diving and snorkeling in this area is also fantastic.

Udayana eco Lodge in Bali officially sits just to the west of the Wallace Line though the lodge lies in a dry area in the south where Acacia species common to Australia are found with many birds and butterflies.

Both Rimba Orangutan eco Lodge and Satwa Sumatra Elephant eco Lodge are on the Asian side of the line. In one holiday, guests can see orangutans, proboscis monkeys, gibbons, several species of macaques and leaf eating langur monkeys and tarsiers (a primate lovers delight). One can also see sun bears, wild pig, giant squirrels, magnificent butterflies and birds.

In Sumatra at Way Kambas, there are no orangutans or proboscis monkeys but there are Siomang Gibbons (with bass, tenor and soprano calls); also elephants, rhinos, tigers, sun bears, tapirs, several species of deer, civets, binturong (mongoose like animals) are found all over the park.  Birds abound on the rivers of the park especially raptors, king fishers, egrets, bee eaters, broadbills, pittas and of course the unique white winged wood duck.

The lodges provide transport by vehicle or boat, and we can arrange air tickets between the lodges to make it a seamless package.  Each lodge is run according to the "six pillars of eco tourism" as suggested by The University of Western Sydney. Udayana eco Lodge is also eco certified by Green Globe 21, the highest eco standard (the only small hotel in Indonesia).

We protect the environment and around each hotel is a protected area. We conserve energy and water, recycle our sewage for return to the gardens, have worm composting systems, recycle garbage, employ local people and support local industry. We also have an eco training program for all our stakeholders. Our accounting systems are transparent and a group of eco investors assist us financially to develop our lodges.

Your visit really makes a difference giving employment and a reason for local communities to protect their unique flora and fauna. More visitors means more eyes to make poaching and illegal logging more difficult.
